Alma Ria Designs
Alma Ria Designs is a family-owned small business in St. Petersburg, Florida. Made up of a mother and daughter team, they specialize in custom, handcrafted fabric kitchen and home wares, such aprons, bowl cozies, quilts and wall hangings. Alma Ria came to me in 2020 to design their logo, and we have had an ongoing relationship since. I most recently helped them launch their website on Square's ecommerce platform.
Taekwon-Do School of Excellence
Taekwon-Do School of Excellence is a long-running Taekwon-Do studio currently based in Sarasota, Florida. Master Obregon has taught Taekwon-Do since the late 1970's, but it wasn't until the late 2000's that he decided to invest in a comprehensive brand for his school. Using his existing badge logo as a jumping off point, I created a complementary wordmark and developed brand identity guidelines. We've had an ongoing relationship since, and our next step is to build the TKDSE website.
8-Bit Weather
This is a project inspired by my kids' newfound love of vintage Super Mario Bros. In the name of learning Javascript, I created a desktop weather dashboard which displays the current time and weather conditions, as well as a five day forecast. The dashboard also features a search function to lookup weather based on US zip codes, as well a custom set of video game inspired weather icons. All weather data is gathered by accessing the Open Weather Map API.
Moon Song
One evening, while listening to music on my phone, I found myself wishing there could be a more immersive experience, something that involved visual elements, but was not as elaborate as a full-on music video. I came up with the idea of a song-specific mini player, and chose a favorite song of mine, "Moon Song" by Phoebe Bridgers. The challenge I set for myself was to do as much as possible using only HTML and CSS. The only Javascript I used was for the audio controls. So headphones on, and enjoy how the music syncs to the movements of the moon and the stars.
Better Baby
From fall of 2022 to the spring of 2023, I completed the Google UX Design Professional Certificate. The culminating portfolio project for the course was to design an app that served the greater good. During the ideation phase, I came up with the concept of BetterBaby, a how-to app for first time parents. As the father of 2 young boys, I wanted to develop an app that I would have found useful when my oldest was born. At that time my experience with babies was basically none, and I spent a lot of time on parenting blogs and Googling random health questions at 3 in the morning. What I could have used back then was a single app that had tips and advice, tutorials and video guides, and curated expert articles. BetterBaby is this solution, and would be available as both a mobile app and responsive website, allowing users to sync content and progress across all platforms.
Merch Table
From fall of 2022 to the spring of 2023, I completed the Google UX Design Professional Certificate. For my first portfolio project, I came up with the idea for Merch Table, a mobile shopping app through which bands could sell their concert merchandise, and users would have the ability to preview apparel, listen to music tracks, and ultimately purchase items without having to leave their prime spot in front of the stage. There are a number of pain points in buying concert merch, and the app is designed to alleviate some of these by having an option to pick up items at designated spots in the venue, having a virtual try on option for clothing, and putting in place a refund and exchange policy for non-music merchandise.
About
I’m a designer based in sunny St. Petersburg, Florida. I have over 20 years of experience in a career that spans graphic design, UI/UX design, web development, architecture and photography.
I was that kid who took apart all the family electronics, and thought the family encyclopedia set was the most fascinating reading material in the world. I’ve loved drawing for as long as I can remember, and those earliest memories were all about creating spaces. I drew houses and cities and tunnels and mazes and pages upon pages of maps. No creation was too fanciful and I refused to let my worlds be held back by the laws of everyday physics.
Like any other human being, I gravitate toward symmetry and order, but just as much I love a riotous mix of bright colors and styles. Thanks to my wife, two boys, and a dog, our home is, on a good day, a kind of organised chaos. But really, it’s an intricately curated collection of memories and objects that I find beautiful, arranged in a way to bring the maximum amount joy.
